I don't buy Smith's sudden, road-to-Damascus-like conversion. I think she - and the separatists in her office and caucus - have simply done the electoral math and realized they face electoral doom otherwise, but figure that her debt to the separatists that put her in the premier's office is now paid. Time will tell, but it's just more of the same rank opportunism.
I do have somewhat of a problem putting Peter Lougheed and Ralph Klein in the same sentence. Yes they both advocated against separatism. But as to everything else they were polar opposites - in that Klein operated to destroy every good thing Peter Lougheed had initiated and enacted. To put them together, even on that one issue, leaves the implication that they were “equals” in governing. They were not. They were polar opposites. Just wanted to make that point.
When I think of Doug Ford, I think of a Premier of a Province. When I think of David Eby, I think of a Premier of a Province. When I think of Wab Kinew, I think of a Premier of a Province. When I think of Danielle Smith, I think of the leader of a political party.
After the UCP’s petty bickering and withholding funds for the Jasper rebuild, I wouldn’t blame Mr Ireland and the rest of Jasper’s good townsfolk if they had upped stakes and moved to BC as the poster for “Elbows up…” seems to indicate. But I believe he and the rest of the town still reside in Alberia. 😉
John Vaillant’s Fire Weather book is the best I’ve ever read on the climate crisis. Really looking forward to this event next week, thanks for promoting it. And thanks, as always, for the perceptive insights on the Alberta political merry-go-round.
I would suggest that the "grievances" these unhappy soles are consumed by is not Ottawa but the Liberal Party of Canada. It seems that all the horrors of history have been visited solely on Alberta in the last decade, by the Trudeau Liberals. There was P.E.T but most of us who were around then have taught our children well. Just too bad the powers that be are not of the responsible kind and take the job of governing Alberta seriously.

It’s a foxhole she’s in. Of her own choosing
The Ottawa bashing is to cover the gross incompetence of 40 years of conservative mismanagement of the province’s assets.
It’s we’ve screwed up but let’s blame someone else to cover up.
Gerson is right. Albertans working cooperatively with others will prevail. Notley is a shining example of doing just that.
