Having both the leader and deputy leader of the party both from Edmonton, does nothing to dispel the belief of many Calgarians that the NDP are an Edmonton-centric party. With many MLA’s from Calgary to choose from, this was not a bright decision. The deputy leader should have come from Calgary.
Thanks for the comment, Marc. I thought that as well. I think it shows how much trust Notley has in Hoffman, but it does feel like a bit of a missed symbolic opportunity to not appoint someone like Ceci or Ganley to the role. I guess the next question of which of the Calgary NDP MLAs would run for leader if and when Notley decides to step aside? I’d bet on Ganley stepping up.
