Good questions Dave. Who will stand up for Canada? We do need a strong leader to speak for all of us loyal Canadians in Alberta. I feel like PMMC is doing a fantastic job on the world stage and here in Canada. I would now love to see him take a hard line against the Alberta separatists and stand up FOR the Canada Health Act. That would be a great start 🇨🇦

Thanks for the comment, Brenda. I think Carney certainly understands Albertans better than a lot of past federal party leaders for sure. I expect a lot of Albertans will hope he doesn’t stay quiet on the issue.

I think part of the strategy should be pointing out that the APP’s absurd and racist right wing goals in separation would be the foundation for the constitution of a new country of Alberta. And anyone thinking this new nation would be a democracy with non conservative choices is fooling themselves.

I’ll be calling a realtor and leaving this nuthouse province if this referendum starts to look like it has any possibility of passing.

Born raised, educated and lived in Alberta for seven decades. I honestly cannot remember anything that was remotely a prejudiced act by the Parliament of Canada, Government of Canada or single PM that was aimed at destroying Alberta as a politcal and economic reality. I would say that the National Energy Policy would be the one thing that really set some Albertans against the Liberal Party. Trudeau became a four letter word in Alberta, and still is in a vast part of our citizenry. The problem is that as far as being in the Canadian family goes, Alberta has never been singled our for the wrath of the Government of Canada. However, that is not really what this separatist thing is about. I believe their movement has more to do with the pseudo-christian right wing goals than anything economic. It is a move to social engineering, which they claim the leftists are doing. They will make the whole thing about race, immigration, DEI and anything else they can dredge up to make people think they are being discriminated against. We sensible "woke" Boomers know that the economics are untenable, but to the horde blaming immigrants for everything from housing to groceries just won't do it alone. I really do not see where immigration, foreign workers and all the other racist blather, if true actually hurts the rural folk. I have lived in a smallish Alberta town, worked in an even smaller one and have worked in the Oil Patch, Construction/Transportation and Public Education in this province and in many cases the TFW programs at times proved beneficial to farmers to get work done. WE do need someone who can lead the charge for remaining in Canada and that person needs to be a person with credibility and a reputation for fairness and honesty in Alberta. With politicians, that may not be possible, given the public view of politicians at the present time. I really feel that some Federal Minister must take on the task of convincing Albertans of the realities of the issue. Mr. Nenshi makes good textbooky speeches about all manner of things; BUT, he is textbooky, and lacks the fire in the belly that might make those just wanting to send a message to Ottawa, actually pay attention. I haven't the foggiest idea who might lead this fight but I would like to see People of the stature of Anne McLellan get on top of this and be more visible Is she not a Senator? If push come to shove, I may have to move back to Canada just to keep my health care manageable. We need an Elbows Up here in Alberta against the UCP and its handlers.

Comedian Yvon Deschamps used to say that Quebecois wanted an independent Quebec within a strong Canada, Interesting that Michelle Smith has taken up that line. I wonder if she knows who originated it?

That’s a great question! I hadn’t heard about that before.

For Mrs David Smith Moretta this is neither about separation for or against. She’s in it solely for herself and her employer.

She will eat if the tide turns right or middle, she doesn’t care.

Her ideology is Danielle first, last and foremost.

Time to start asking some more of the questions that should really put this to bed:

*What happens if (when) the US is no longer under Republican / Trump control - what is the plan to get Alberta's oil/resources out to market, especially as the other party is on an increasingly green agenda?

*What is the timeline and expected process to have corporations set up and registered to do business in the independent country of Alberta, instead of in Canada? This includes telecoms, utilities, banks, infrastructure / construction firms, tech firms, etc.

*Have any discussions been had - let alone any assurances received - that entities with national oversight, such as the NHL teams (!) and any publicly traded company on the TSX, but also any professions that have governing bodies, that they will have an Alberta-based / exclusive framework upon separation? We already have interprovincial trade barriers significantly impacting GDP - what happens for professionals who do work on projects outside of Alberta?

*Separatists cite Slovakia as an example of a successful separation from Czechoslovakia - Slovakia is a part of the EU. Would the plan be to have Alberta integrate into the next version of CUSMA? How does that fit into current timelines for negotiations?

*What is the plan to divest/manage foreign oil sands ownership? Where would that capital be sourced? If none, then is the APP okay with the Chinese (and other) ownership of our major producers?

_______

The people most excited/angry/emotional about separation have not thought of these logistical hurdles or even heard about them from actual business leaders. Glad to see Nancy Southern spoke up - her comments should be amplified (much more so than Nenshi's, lol), and we need others like Darryl Katz, Bob Gomes of Stantec, and maybe even Brett Wilson to step up and make it clear that there would be massive consequences beyond what people like Rath are simplifying.

I'm confused.

Mr. Sylvestre's citizen petition is asking the question "Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?" It may be a successful petition.

The "Alberta Forever Canada" citizen petition asked the question "Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada". It was a successful petition.

Why is Alberta then perhaps voting on the first question and not the second?

Is it because the first was a "Constitutional referendum proposal" and the second was a "Legislative or policy proposal"?
